Weekly Inspiration: Hoodwinked!

Happy April Fools Day!

In honor of the day, I’d love to recount one of my favorite stories about the Potemkin village. It’s a real story, so it falls under “fact that inspires story” and took place in Russia during the reign of Queen Catherine II during her travels through Crimea after Russia annexed it from the Ottoman Empire. It’s all in the Wikipedia article but the gist of the story is that these fake villages were erected, called Potemkin villages, for the sole purpose of making everything look perfect from the outside and is now commonly used to describe literal and figurative “false advertising,” let’s say. It was also cleverly used in Blazing Saddles, a famous Mel Brooks film, where the crux of the story hinges on a Potemkin village erected to trick the bad guys.

As promised, next week begins the blog series about research so get your pen and paper (or favorite Word processor) ready! And for those who are really eager, I guess the highlighter can come out, too. Have a happy (and safe) April Fools!
